September 22, 2010 - Jay Cooke State Park

I love Jay Cooke. It is one of my favorites. The hiking, bird watching and photographic possibilities are outstanding. Got here late, so the visitors office was closed, but that is something you don't want to miss. They have a nice topographical relief map that shows the landscape of the park. In fact, they are building new visitor center. I look forward to seeing it when completed.

I have stayed in the camper cabins here in the past and the mattresses are better than most hotels. I would prefer to stay in one of the camper cabins than a hotel in Duluth or the surrounding areas. Besides, I have never been able to have a campfire in a hotel and that is the best part of staying at a state park.

Hiked across the suspension bridge to the Carlton Trail on the south side of the river. Hiked west for about 1/2 mile and returned to the visitor center. Not much for photography due to the rain and lack of light, got there around 7 PM. Attached a few pictures from past visits. One is of Willard Monger trail bridge and the other is of the St. Louis River.
